Woody's Children
Doug's best known song, now re-recorded and re-mastered
This re-recording of Doug's best-known song, "Woody's Children," will appear on his forthcoming album, "Tip of the Spear." The original version was the title cut on Doug's 1987 album.
Doug revised the original in 2012 in honor of Woody’s 100th birthday. Here's a video of that version where Doug was joined by Tom Paxton, Tom Chapin, Peter Yarrow, Christine Lavin, Aztec Two-Step, Buskin & Batteau, Catie Curtis, Guy Davis, Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer, and Jeff Daniels (yes, the actor).
A Night to Celebrate Woody Guthrie and Woody’s Children: To celebrate Woody’s 100th birthday in 2012, Doug and his brother Budd Mishkin (a frequent host of programs at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan) assembled a group of their folk musician friends for a sold-out celebration of songs and stories, including Aztec Two-Step, David Broza, Buskin & Batteau, Tom Chapin and Christine Lavin, with special guest Robert Sherman, host of the long-time radio show “Woody’s Children.” Here’s a link to Doug singing “Woody’s Children” with the entire cast.
“’Woody’s Children’ is a song that captures the spirit of the American folk revival….I’ve featured it on the anniversary of my folk series…(for which it was written and named), first using Doug’s homemade performance, then since 1984 the great singalong edition we taped in our auditorium with artists like Tom Paxton, Fred Hellerman and Susan Reed in the chorus….I like to think that whenever people sing ‘We are all Woody’s Children,’ they are not only saluting the Guthrie Tradition our program celebrates, but making the song itself a small part of that tradition.”
-Robert Sherman
long-time host of the radio show “Woody’s Children” on WFUV-FM and earlier WQXR-FM in New York City
“…I was just about snowed in this weekend…and began to clean up my TAPES…and then I played a few…and when I got to your tape…with that lovely song…WE ARE ALL WOODY’S CHILDREN…I knew I had to write today to tell you …that song brought such nice feelings!...LOVE AND PEACE!"
